1 teaspoon Salt
1 Large Egg
¼ cup Unsalted Butter
½ cup All-Purpose Flour (for the traditional cross)
3-4 tablespoons Water (for the traditional cross)
¼ cup Apricot Jam or Honey (for the glaze)
1 tablespoon Orange Zest
½ teaspoon Cardamom
½ cup Dark Chocolate Chips
¼ cup Dried Cherries
2 tbsp melted Butter (for cinnamon swirl)
2 tbsp Brown Sugar (for cinnamon swirl)
1 tsp Cinnamon (for cinnamon swirl)
4 oz Cream Cheese (for filling)
2 tbsp Powdered Sugar (for filling)
½ tsp Vanilla (for filling)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by combining warm milk, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and yeast; let sit until foamy
  2. Combine wet ingredients by adding remaining sugar, egg, and melted butter to the yeast mixture
  3. Gradually add flour and salt; mix until combined
  4. Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic, incorporating any mix-ins during the last minute
  5. Let the dough rise in a greased bowl for 1-1.5 hours until doubled in size
  6. Punch down the dough, divide into 12 portions, and shape into buns, adding any preferred twists
  7. Let shaped buns rise again for 30-45 minutes
  8. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Prepare the cross paste
  9. Pipe crosses on buns and bake for 15-20 minutes until golde
  10. Glaze warm buns with apricot jam or honey
